Photoethics

On a past trip, to Haiti, I was rather indiscriminate with my pic snapping, and failed to observe what I knew then, and what I am firmly convicted of now, namely that to take someone’s picture is a rather intrusive act. So, this time around, I am only taking pics of people who obviously want to be photo’d. There are many glimpses into people’s lives and aspects of faces and souls that I would be overjoyed to be able to share with you, but which must remain the intimate secret gifts between people who are actually in each other’s presence, who share some experience of life together. Besides, it is usually the case that the glimpses don’t show up on film anyway; it turns out that these things, happily, resist reduction to their outward, visible manifestations.
